    One painting book entitled Betty's Painting Book, published by Stecher Lith. Co., Rochester, New York, 1917. This book is composed of 12 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations, the latter meant for painting. The front cover is a vivid chromolithograph of a seated girl, painting in watercolor. The words "Instructive, Entertaining" are printed at the top of the cover, one word in each corner. "No. 38" is printed in the lower right-hand corner, and the cover illustration is signed "Maynard Evans Price". The back cover is the same image, in reverse. The title of the book is repeated at the top of the inside front cover; beneath it is a 6-stanza rhyme which provides instructions for using the book. On the inside of the back cover is the last outline image for coloring. Each page contains a child or pair of children from different countries; some pages contain just an outline image, others contain both a chromolithograph image and an outline image. Each is accompanied by a brief rhyme; for example: "This English mite is shy tho bright, And always kind to pets you'll find." None of the images have been colored.

    Home Painting Book

    One painting book entitled Home Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1930. The book is comprised of a series of double illustrations; for each set, one image is printed in color, the other is printed in outline form. The outline image was meant to be painted. On the front cover is a color illustration of two children picking flowers. A collage of colored chalk against a black background borders the principal illustration. "McLoughlin Bros. Inc., Springfield, Mass." is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover; "2044, made in USA" is printed in the right-hand corner. The back cover is blank. The endpapers are illustrated with geometric designs. Directions for using the book and mixing paint colors are on the recto of the first page. The illustrations are printed on one side of each leaf. Some of the images within the book include scenes of playing children, animals, flowers and food. Few of the images have been filled in.

    The Dutch Boy's Lead Party

    One promotional painting book by O.C. Harn, published by National Lead Company. The first page shows the Dutch Boy talking to the lead soldier, followed by 14 images--7 in color and 7 in outline--of items that use lead, including a light bulb (lead glass), shoes and baseballs (lead in the rubber), and a bullet (entirely made of lead). Each outlined image was to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. Some of the images have been filled in using watercolor. There are four perforated tabs at the end of the book--probably where the "Color Harmony in the Home" booklet, mentioned on the front cover, would have been included before its removal for use by adults.

    One promotional painting book by O.C. Harn, published by National Lead Company, with 14 images, 7 in color and 7 in outline to be filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. Some of the images have been filled in using watercolor. There are four perforated tabs at the end of the book--probably where the "Decorative and Protective Painting" booklet, mentioned on the front cover, would have been included before its removal for use by adults.

    The Dutch Boy's Jingle Paint Book

    One promotional painting book and manufacturer's advertisement by O.C. Harn, published by National Lead Company. The book contains twenty images, with nine color images and nine identical outline images to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. In the center of the book are squares of watercolor with overlays of tissue paper. Some of the images have been filled in using these watercolors, others have been filled in with both watercolor and wax crayon. On the bottom edge of the back inside cover, stamped in purple ink, are the numbers "96448 ORD 1178 21."

    Columbus Drawing Book for the Kiddies

    One drawing book entitled Columbus Drawing Book for the Kiddies, published by Capital City Dairy Co., Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1917. The front cover shows a girl sitting at a table, drawing in a book with crayons; below the image is the subtext "Color with crayons, Win a Prize, See Inside." On the back cover is an image of four children carrying a box of Columbus Oleomargarine on two poles, as if it were on a sedan chair; above the image is printed "Look for this display in your grocer's store." A promotional piece for Columbus Oleomargarine, the booklet describes on the front inside cover and first page how to enter the contest (full instructions are given on pp. 10 & 11). The last page and back cover have recipes "in which Margarine has been Thoroughly Tested." There are 12 images in the book--six in color, six in outline. The outlined images were to be filled in using the complementary color image to its side as a guide. Each image illustrates a rhyming jingle also on the page, which makes reference to Columbus margarine. None of the images have been filled in. On the back cover, stamped in ink below "for sale by," is "Hertzler Bros. & Co., General Merchandise, Elizabethtown, Pa." and in the upper left-hand corner, in pencil, "98-90."
