One book entitled Teachers' Manual for Free-Hand Drawing in Primary Schools, by Walter Smith, published by James R. Osgood & Company, Boston, 1873. Also on the title page: "Intended to accompany the American Drawing-Cards, by the same author." This book is 104 numbered pages in length, and is comprised of an Introduction and 5 chapters: "Chapter 1, Centre, Points, and Straight Lines; Chapter 2, Straight-Line Figures; Chapter 3, Simple Curves; Chapter 4, Compound Curves- the Ellipse and Oval; Chapter 5, Compound Curves- Reversed Curves- The Ogee- Abstract Curves." Each of the lessons refer to, and illustrate, the Smith drawing cards intended to accompany the book. Title is within a simple double-rule frame on the front cover. The insides of the covers, as well as the back cover, are blank. "Sarah F. Richmond, Dec. 1873" is written in ms., in ink, in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. "dc, 5/84, 10-" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand

One drawing book entitled White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, by H.P. Smith, published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., New York and Chicago, copyright 1878. "Engravings by John Karst" appears on the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. This book consists of 16 pages with 15 lessons (lesson 15 is wanting). Each lesson is accompanied by blank space or partial-model for copying by the owner. Some of the items for copying include vases, plants and flowers, Egyptian and Greek ornaments and designs, and pattern designs. The front cover is illustrated with a decorative border and an image of a decorated vase. The inside back cover lists geometric terms and their definitions, as well as quotations from Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "White's School Series of Industrial Drawing and Progressive Art Studies." This book is vertically oriented; the spine is along the long side of the book at the top, and is to be opened and used by lifting the cover up, instead of to the right, as usual. Some of the images have been copied in pencil by a previous owner. "Annie S. Todd" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

Easy Pictures for Slate Drawing

One drawing book/leaflet entitled Easy Pictures for Slate Drawing, published by Lyon Manufacturing Co., New York, ca. 1860. This item is a promotional advertisement for several products: Lyon's Magnetic Insect Powder; Mexican Mustang Liniment; Hagan's Magnolia Balm; Plantation Bitters and Lyon's Kathairon. On one side of this 10-page accordian-folded leaflet there are 5 advertisements (four of which with woodcut illustrations); the other side consists of the front cover (printed in red, black and white) and four "pages" of white-on-black illustrations, made to look like slate drawings. The images for copying include domestic and farm animals. All of the pages are unnumbered. "4-" (price) is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

One drawing book entitled Fun-Time Drawing, by George Carlson, published by The Platt & Munk Co., Inc., copyright 1937. This book is comprised of 14 pages (including the insides of the front and back covers) of either step-by-step drawing instructions for line drawing or colored and uncolored images for coloring, copying, or tracing. The front cover is an image of a clown drawing a picture of a dog. "No. 3500" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. "$1.00" (price) is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page. Some of the illustrations in the book have been colored in with crayon.

One joint drawing and tracing book entitled Drawing and Tracing Book: Boats and Houses, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1898. The cover title reads: Drawing and Tracing Book. This book is comprised of 8 lithograph plates of images for tracing and drawing, with 8 leaves of tracing paper bound in. The front cover is a chromolithograph image of a boy and a girl in a rowboat. Both are wearing hats, and the little boy is rowing like a gondolier. The back cover is a green and white mesh pattern. The images for tracing are of various types of boats and houses. "81" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. None of the images have been traced or copied. "Bertie from Emily Jan. 11-1911" is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the title page. "2.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

One drawing book entitled Elementary Drawing Book; A Series of Easy Progressive Lessons For Young Beginners, New and Improved Edition, No. VIII, by George Childs, published by David Bogue, London, ca. 1875. This drawing book is comprised of four lithograph plates, numbered 25-28. The title and publisher's information on the front cover are framed by a floral, decorative border. "Price nine pence" is printed in the upper right hand corner, opposite the volume number. "B. Clarke, Printer" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. At the bottom of the first plate is printed "Tilt & Bogue, Fleet Street, London. J.R. Jobbins, Zinco." Each of the four plates are untitled and contain two separate views per leaf, side by side. Some of the views include human figures. There are no textual instructions, and there is no space provided for copying. The back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "New and Superior Drawing Books".
