The Easel Painting Book

One painting book entitled The Easel Painting Book: With Pictures that Children can "easily" paint, published by Ernest Nister, London, and distributed in the United States by E.P. Dutton & Co., New York, ca. 1890. The front cover of the book shows two children at an easel- a little girl holding a palette and paint brushes, a boy kneeling and playing with a dog. The book has been cut to fit the image on the cover so it has irregular edges. On the inside front cover is the note "To Inez Kimball from Aunt Inez, Christmas 1890." The book contains various images tied to nursery rhymes and verses. There are twenty pages in the book, some with multiple images. Most of the images are in outline form, although there are some printed in color as a guide to the student. The first page contains some brief instructions in verse, including the lines: If you take my advice what is proper to do, / Don't paint the skies red, or the moon blue. None of the images have been filled in.

Pretty Pets Paint Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Pretty Pets Paint Box, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 28 cakes of watercolor paint, two small porcelain dishes, one paintbrush, a piece of glass, and a 5-inch paper ruler. The cakes of paint are embossed with an artist's palette design, and are contained within wooden dividers in a wooden box (no lid). This box is housed within a paperboard box (which does have a lid). Mounted onto the paperboard lid is a chromolithograph image of three girls, each painting a toy elephant. "2.00" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the image on the lid.

The Dutch Boy's Jingle Paint Book

One promotional painting book and manufacturer's advertisement by O.C. Harn, published by National Lead Company. The book contains twenty images, with nine color images and nine identical outline images to be filled in using the complementary color image at its side as a guide. In the center of the book are squares of watercolor with overlays of tissue paper. Some of the images have been filled in using these watercolors, others have been filled in with both watercolor and wax crayon. On the bottom edge of the back inside cover, stamped in purple ink, are the numbers "96448 ORD 1178 21."

Superfine Painting Colors

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Superfine Painting Colors, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1880. The set is comprised of 40 rectangular, embossed cakes of watercolor paint, two round porcelain dishes, two paint brushes, and two embossed cakes of charcoal. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The paints are divided into 5 rows of 8 each, and each cake of paint is embossed with an image of a family crest. The lid is not labeled; a label is affixed, however, to the bottom of the paint brush compartment.

Below each image are a few lines of promotional text. None of the images have been colored in, and the paints have not been used.

Tom Sawyer Painting Set

One boxed painting set entitled Tom Sawyer Painting Set, manufactured by Standard Solophone Manufacturing Company, N.Y., in conjunction with Paramount Pictures, copyright 1931. This set is comprised of 30 cakes of watercolor paint, two metal dishes, four small tubes of watercolor paints, 8 colored wax crayons, 8 outline images for painting, 2 color images (stills) from the movie, and a 4-page "'Tom Sawyer' Nuart Poster Color Guide." The images in this set are based on the Paramount Pictures movie Tom Sawyer starring Jackie Coogan as Tom. Four of the eight paint-by-number outline images have been completed. On the lid of the box is a scene of 'Tom' painting a portrait of 'Junior Durkin', who is seated in front of him. An artist's palette and a box of paints are behind 'Tom'. Below the image of the two boys is printed "Characters from the Paramount Photo-Play." "Copyright 1931" and "Made by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., N.Y. Made in USA" and "Picture contents copyright 1931 by Standard Solophone Mfg. Co., Inc." are printed in the lower left and right-hand corners, respectively, of the lid. The watercolor paint inside the box has been lightly used; the crayons have not been used.
