One boxed painting set, ca. 1915. This set is contained within a light wooden box and is comprised of a wooden tray which holds (via red elastic bands) 10 small cakes of watercolor paint, two porcelain mixing dishes, two paintbrushes, a 5-inch wooden ruler, and two wooden sticks. Tucked into the top lid and below a cardstock divider in the bottom half are 8 sheets containing original artwork. An additional sheet with sample images for copying is included and tucked into the top lid. The top lid is attached to the box with a red cloth ribbon and decorated with a chromolithograph image, in the shape of an artist's palette, of a winter scene. A small metal lock is affixed to both halves of the box. No manufacturer is listed; no date is given. Title supplied by cataloger.

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Superfine Painting Colors, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1880. The set is comprised of 40 rectangular, embossed cakes of watercolor paint, two round porcelain dishes, two paint brushes, and two embossed cakes of charcoal. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The paints are divided into 5 rows of 8 each, and each cake of paint is embossed with an image of a family crest. The lid is not labeled; a label is affixed, however, to the bottom of the paint brush compartment.

Machine Cut Stencil Combination

One boxed metal stencil set entitled Machine Cut Stencil Combination, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1885. The set is comprised of a stencil brush, one can of stencil ink, a sponge, a brass alphabet and a set (10) of brass figures (numbers and a dollar sign). The set is housed within a paperboard box which has a printed paper label mounted to the top lid. The label is illustrated with an image of the set in use. Directions and suggestions for use are printed on the label: "For marking boxes, barrels, bags and packages for shipment. Printing all manner of show cards, notices, signs, numbers, prices, etc. Instructive and amusing for Boys." Accompanying the set is a glass jar containing what appears to be white paint, and a cardboard stencil of the letter "V"; these items were not part of the original set. The stencil set has been used. Note: This box is very dirty (due to the dry ink)--please wash hands after handling this item.

Drawing Made Easy for the Kindergarten, Set No. 5

One boxed set of paper stencils entitled Drawing Made Easy for the Kindergarten, Set No. 5, manufactured by McLoughlin Bros., New York, 1897. This set of 11 paper stencils contains many of the same stencils as those in Box 81 Set 3. Accompanying the stencils are 5 pencil drawings that have been made with the stencils. Some of the images represented by the stencils include circus performers, animals and famous landmarks. The set is housed within a paperboard box, which has a chromolithograph paper label mounted to the top lid. The image on the lid is of a bespectacled girl who is painting at a desk. "For the Little Folks" and "Set No. 5, 10 kinds" are printed in the lower left-hand and right-hand corners, respectively, of the image. "Copyright 1897 by McLoughlin Bros. N.Y." is printed in the bottom center of the label.

Pretty Pets Paint Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Pretty Pets Paint Box, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 28 cakes of watercolor paint, two small porcelain dishes, one paintbrush, a piece of glass, and a 5-inch paper ruler. The cakes of paint are embossed with an artist's palette design, and are contained within wooden dividers in a wooden box (no lid). This box is housed within a paperboard box (which does have a lid). Mounted onto the paperboard lid is a chromolithograph image of three girls, each painting a toy elephant. "2.00" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the image on the lid.

Donald Duck Paint Box

One boxed watercolor paint set entitled Donald Duck Paint Box, manufactured by Transogram, Inc., New York and Walt Disney Productions, 1950. The set is comprised of 12 molded star-shaped cakes of watercolor paints and one paintbrush, housed within a decorated tin box. The paints are affixed to the bottom of the box, and printed within the center (on paper) is: "Donald Duck Paint Set, No. 1422." The underside of the hinged lid bears black, red and white images of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy and Dopey. At the bottom of the underside of the lid is printed "A Transogram Gold Medal Craft Set" and "[copyright symbol] Walt Disney Productions." "Copyright 1950 Walt Disney Productions" is printed at the bottom of the top lid illustration. Images of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse painting feature on the top lid.
