One drawing book entitled The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1899. The subtitle reads: Description, Specimen Illustrations from different grades and Opinions of leading Supervisors and Teachers. This 40-page book is primarily a collection of written testimonials about the Prang drawing system. Pages 3-6 are devoted to an outline and explanation of the system and its various levels and courses, and the remaining pages are excerpts from letters of praise from art teachers in the U.S., illustrated with both images from the Prang instructional drawing books and samples of artwork created using the Prang courses. The first two pages are composed of illustrations. The front cover is illustrated in the upper left-hand corner with a small, rectangular image of three daffodils. On the inside of the front cover begins "European Opinions in Regard to the Prang Course", which continues onto the inside back cover and the back cover. "2- BDF as is" (price) written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

One scrapbook/collage created from The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, copyright 1899. The scrapbook is 40 numbered pages in length, and scrapbook images have also been added to the insides of the covers, and to the back cover. The scrapbook images are cut from newspapers and magazines, and cover most but not all of the lithograph images of the instruction book. Most of the images are black and white, but there are also many chromolithograph images. The majority of the scrapbook images are of women. "Cora E. Nash" is stamped, in blue ink, on the front cover.

Two drawing books entitled White's New Course in Art Instruction For Elementary Schools, published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, copyright 1892. One book is labeled 5th year, the other as 7th year. Bound in brown paper. 5th year is 32 pages in length, (numbered and unnumbered); 7th year is 36 pages in length (numbered and unnumbered). The unnumbered pages in these two volumes were used as copying pages. All of the copying pages in 7th year are blank; some of them in 5th year have been filled in with pencil drawings. 5th year contains one page with paper cutout pattern pasted in. In each book are also several pages of "Illustrated Definitions", and the inside front and back covers of each book are manufacturers' advertisements for "Materials for the Study of Color, Form, and Drawing" to be used in connection with the books in the series.

This pamphlet is 36 numbered pages in length, and is not illustrated. The 9-page introduction is signed by Louis Prang, and is dated March 1, 1890. "University Press: John Wilson and Son, Cambridge" is printed on the verso of the title page.

American Text-Books of Art Education, Clark Edition, No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9

Three drawing books entitled American Text-Books of Art Education, Clark Edition, No. 5, No. 8, and No. 9, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1882-1886. These books are each 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises of lithograph illustrations, which emphasize line and form (Book No. 5); construction and representation (Book No. 8); and construction, representation and Roman decoration (Book No. 9). The front covers are decoratively bordered. The inside of the front cover of each features a "Special Notice to Teachers", which explains the use of this book. Book No. 8 also contains an advertisement for Prang's Models for Drawing on the inside of the front cover. A publisher's advertisement for "Prang's American Text-Books of Art Education: a course of instruction in drawing for public schools" begins on the inside of the back cover and continues onto the back cover of Book No. 5. This same advertisement is just on the back covers of Books 8 and 9. The exercises within consist of illustrations, patterns and designs of a relatively simple nature, often floral and leafy designs. Each of the exercises is textually and visually explained, with space for continuation or copying. Most of the exercises in each of the 3 books have been copied by a previous owner. "Mary Jones" and "1.00" (price) are written in ms. at the top of the front cover of Book No. 5. "Lucius Tompkins" is written in ms., along the spine side, on the front cover of Book No. 8. Book No. 5 is smaller than the other two. The dimensions provided are for Books 8 and 9.

One pamphlet entitled A Syllabus of a Course of Illustrated Lectures on Historic Art: Historic Ornament and Sculpture, Series of 1899, by James Frederick Hopkins, published by Geo. H. Ellis, Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1898. This book is 36 numbered pages in length, and is illustrated with black and white reproductions of photographs and drawings. The front cover is illustrated with a drawing of a sculpture, and is printed in green. Two quotations from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow appear on the back cover. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. "Pres of Geo. H. Ellis, Boston" and "Engravings by Folsom and Sunergren, Boston" are printed at the bottom of p. 2. The course schedule, with dates of lectures, is given on p. 4. A listing of some "General works on the history of art" is found on the next 3 pages. The remainder of the book is devoted to fuller descriptions, with illustrations, of each of the topics and sections addressed in the course. Beginning on p. 25 is "A selected list of books in the Boston Public Library recommended for reading in connection with the lectures." "6.50" (price) is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.
