  Visual Materials

  View shows fireplace with mirror above it, a cabinet, and a desk. The paintings on the walls are George Romney's Margaret Beckford, later Margaret Orde, and Susan Euphemia Beckford, later Duchess of Hamilton: The Beckford Children (1789-1791); and John Wright of Derby's Young man with cap and gown (circa 1760). The paintings reflected in the mirror are Sir Joshua Reynold's Lord Henry Spender and Lady Charlotte Spencer, later Charlotte Nares: The Young Fortune Teller (circa 1774-1775); and Reynold's the Hon. Theresa Parker, later the Hon. Theresa Villiers (1787). The writing desk (bureau plat) is attributed to Andre-Charles Boulle, with substantial later alterations. The date of the original work is between 1700 and 1705. The chest of drawers (commode) beneath the Romney painting is by Daniel De Loose, from around 1770. The fall front secretary (secrétaire à abbatant) under the Wright painting is by Martin Carlin, from around 1775. The clock on the mantel is stamped Japy Frères et Cie and is from 1785 or later. The Wright painting is the most recent addition to the Huntington collection in the picture: it was acquired by the Huntington in 1933.   A couple can be seen reflected in the mirror. On the wall to the right of the mirror is Joseph Wright of Derby's Young man with cap and gown (circa 1760).   Visual Materials

  The people, from left to right, are Victor Mature, Connie Compaigne, Sheila Stapler, "Buck" Edgar Buchanan, Hal Landon, and Ann West (Wood). Compaigne and Buchanan are seated at a table in dining room, while a standing Mature speaks to Compaigne, and Stapler carries a silver tray. Landon is standing next to the fireplace speaking to a seated West. George Romney's Catherine (Halead) Burton (1789) hangs over the fireplace. Label accompanying photograph in album reads "Tea party group in Dining Room, Huntington Art Gallery. Original fireplace from old house in Hanover Square, London, 1755. Chairs, Georgian, about 1740. Tea table, about 1760." Buchanan has elsewhere been identified as Frederick Blanchard.

  Thomas Gainsborough's Jonathan Buttall: the blue boy (1770) and Sir Thomas Lawrence's Sarah Goodin Barrett Moulton: "Pinkie" (1794) hanging in the large drawing room of the Huntington residence. The desk in the foreground (bureau plat) is attributed to Andre-Charles Boulle, with substantial later alterations. The date of the original work is between 1700 and 1750. Beneath "Blue Boy" is a chest of drawers (commode) by Daniel De Loose, from around 1770. Beneath "Pinkie" is a chest of drawers by Martin Carlin, from around 1775. The terracotta sculptures in glass cases on either side of the door are by Claude Michel, called Clodion, and his workshop, and date to approximately 1780 to 1790. On the left is Jeune Femme présente son enfant à un autel (A young Woman Presenting Her Child at an Altar). On the right is Jeune Femme tenant un enfant devant elle (Young Woman Holding Her Child in front of Her). Appeared in Los Angeles Times, Annual Midwinter Number, on January 2, 1930. MS note on verso reads "HEH residence as art gallery: large drawing room."
