The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

This collection contains the following series: manuscripts, correspondence, legal documents, ephemera, and oversize. The manuscripts include Moore's daily diaries as well as his field books. The diaries contain short entries reflecting his business activities. The field books contain sketches and calculations of his various surveying projects. The small series of correspondence includes letters from friends written to Moore and his wife. The correspondence also includes one letter from Moore to his wife about his discovery of gold during a mining expedition in 1878. The legal documents include contracts, deeds, indentures, leases, and promissory notes. The two oversize ledgers include notes and drawings of Moore's various surveying projects.

Although the majority of the collection was written by Leroy Jackson, there are several other authors contained in the collection including David Greene, William Hobart Hare, John Collier, John Johnson Enmegahbowh, Lynn J. Frazier, Joseph Alexander Gilfillan, Charles Lemon Hall, Samuel William Pond, W. Carson Ryan, Alfred L. Riggs, Thomas Lawrence Riggs, Jedediah Dwight Stevens, and Frederick Jackson Turner. The material covers the following subjects: early missions and missionaries to Native Americans in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin; Indian schools in Alaska and New Mexico; the Navajo; the Hopi; the public school and university in America and American education; progressive education; probation and the juvenile court.
