    Pressroom - 1959 Campaign letters

    6 items. Form letters from Times-Mirror Company to "...all Times-Mirror pressroom employees and their families." Several letters (over Norman Chandler's signature) were sent in the weeks prior to the 4/16/1959 election in which pressroom employees would vote for or against union representation. On 4/1/1959, a letter went out with an attached sheet titled "Here are the facts," laying out in columns the "Local Union Shop" and "Times-Mirror Co." benefits. The vote went against the union, and on 4/24/1959 another letter was sent thanking the voters for the "strong endorsement of our policies and practices."

    Rubber rollers for Scott Color Press

    Approx. 55 items: letters, financial statements, handwritten notes, a blueprint and a proposal related to purchase and installation of rubber rollers for one or more presses at Times building in the 1933 - 1934 time frame. Companies mostly involved were Times-Mirror Co., Walter Scott & Co. and Niles & Nelson, Inc.

    Approx. 12 items: letters, a memo, a telegram, forms, and other material related to obtaining and installing dispatch conveyors for new Times building in 1933 and 1934. Correspondence is mainly between TM and Cutler-Hammer Inc. Major items: 30" x 54" (approx.) "Second Floor Plan - Times Mirror Co.), Gordon B. Kaufmann (architect), 9/22/1933 ; bound booklet (with cover letter & Cutler-Hammer's Proposal to TM), "Cutler-Hammer Newspaper Conveyors."

    Laventhol, David

    Manuscripts

    David Laventhol (1933 - ) attended Yale and the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Times Mirror, he was an editor at the New York Herald Tribune, the Washington Post, and Newsday. Laventhol was President of Times Mirror from 1987-1993, Publisher & CEO from 1989-1993, and Editor-at-Large from 1994-1998. Series include correspondence, reports, and other material related to the Pulitzer Prize Committee, on which Laventhol sat, arranged chronologically. Date range is 1972-1993.
