    Reports on plague in Los Angeles

    Manuscripts

    This report was compiled by the California State Board of Health on order of Los Angeles Mayor George E. Cryer. It reports on cases of plague in Los Angeles from November 1924 to June 1925. It contains details on individual cases including autopsies, reports from Los Angeles hospitals about cases of plague, animal trapping and poisoning information, medical inspections, and eradication and disinfection efforts. The report also contains several illustrations, black and white photographs and maps. The report includes a table of contents, a preliminary report on bubonic cases, an appendix on rodent plague, Lenert's Report on Harbor District, a Final Report and a copy of Ordinance No. 50,282, "providing sanitary regulations for the protection of public health in the City of Los Angeles." There are copies of letters by Mayor Cryer and the California State Board of Health Secretary and Executive Officer, Dr. Walter M. Dickie. The volume was a gift from Dr. Allen F. Gillihan to the Los Angeles County Medical Association in January 1926.

    A blueprint copy of a colored map. Map shows existing and proposed system. Sources at base of Cahuenga Mountains (Griffith Park Equestrian Center) and Crystal Springs (opposite current Crystal Springs Picnic area in Griffith Park). Shows existing 44 inch steel pipe supply conduit and proposed 60 inch diameter brick lined parallel conduit. Glendale City to the north, Arlington Ave. to the west, Lorena Street to the east, Slauson Ave. to the south. Locates all fire hydrants in the city. Probably a reduced size map from the original.     The collection deals primarily with the professional and personal activities of Samuel Brooks Morris, a civil engineer of note in Southern California who was most active from the 1930s into the early 1960s. The collection deals with local (Pasadena and Los Angeles), state and national engineering concerns, largely related to water reclamation, dams, hydrogeology, water litigation, and a wide range of related technical publications. The material consists of a highly diverse mix of manuscripts and printed materials, including correspondence, maps, notes, charts, fliers, and brochures, often interspersed within each folder. The correspondence is primarly to and from colleagues, but also includes discusion with government officials at all levels from local to national. The collection includes a small number of photographs, located in appropriate sections of the collection by subject.

    The Southern California Regional Planning Collection was donated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Department, George Marr, Edward Holden, Glen Blossom, Simon Eisner, and Glenda Hamilton to the Huntington Library in 1997. The Southern California Regional Planning Collection is organized into two series: 1) Published Planning Reports Series (organized by individual item numbers) 2) Internal Documents Series (organized by box and folder numbers).The Published Planning Reports Series contains 1,913 individual items that were generated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission, Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning, and other planning agencies and organizations in Southern California. Type of reports include annual reports, area study, comprehensive planning reports, census, conference papers, general plans, guides to zoning and subdivision, planning proposals, traffic and environmental surveys, zoning ordinance, etc. The date range of this series is 1909 to 2003.The Internal Documents Series contains approximately 913 items in 14 Hollinger boxes. Similar to the Published Planning Reports Series, the majority of the documents were generated by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission and Department of Regional Planning, followed by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning. Type of documents include census reports, conference papers, maps, memorandums, minutes, photos, plans, reports, speeches, summaries, etc. The date range is 1924 to 2000.
