Carl S. Dentzel Photograph Collection of the American West
Visual Materials
This collection contains 84 photographs of the American West that were collected by Carl S. Dentzel (1913-1980), director of the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, California. The photographs date from the 1870s to the 1890s and include a disbound album of photographs of Alaska taken by A. L. Broadbent. The Alaska album (items 30-84) has a title page inscribed "Mr(?) Baldwin, Dutch Harbor, Unalaska / Compliments of A. L. Broadbent." These photographs all have manuscript captions in ink, presumably written by Broadbent. Scenes include: Alaskan natives, homes, graves; missionaries and schools; walrus hunting; whaling ships; totem poles; portraits of officers in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service; Greek and Russian Orthodox churches; the first grand jury in Nome, Alaska; James Gilchrist Swan; and a portrait of photographer A. L. Broadbent. The other photographs in the collection are a series of Lake Tahoe card photographs; a few views of the logging industry; Kingston, New Mexico; homesteaders and miners in Oklahoma; and some portraits. Of note is a portrait of "D. S. Mitchell, Photographer" and his camera and tent in Oklahoma. Photographers who contributed to this collection include William C. Billington, Alfred Lee Broadbent, F. Davey, Edward De Groff, Charles D. Kirkland, David Sedgley Mitchell, C. H. Shaffner, Julius Ulke, and Raper James Waters.

This collection consists of 278 lantern slides comprising a variety of different images of Southern California and its residents. The first section consists of images of central Los Angeles, primarily street scenes, including a number of images of La Fiesta celebrations and World War I-era parades. Other landscapes and cityscapes in the collection include views of Hollywood and Santa Monica; locations in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, with an emphasis on Monrovia; communities in Orange, San Bernardino and Kern Counties; scenes in Yosemite and other central California locations; and Tijuana. Also included are a number of images of Santa Barbara in the late nineteenth century. The collection is notable for a number of images of Los Angeles area high schools and universities, especially Los Angeles High School. Also included are photographs by members of, and about, the Los Angeles Camera Club; these include photographs by C.C. Pierce, W.M. Frisbie, F.H. Maude, C.C. Valentine, and O. Granicher. Studio portraits and group photographs can be found in the collection; among the identified images are a group portrait of the Los Angeles City Council in 1888; and portraits of Mrs. O.W. Childs, wife of the early Los Angeles pioneer; Isidore Dockweiler, an influential Southern California Democrat; Max Meyberg, organizer of the first La Fiesta celebration in 1894; and Caroline Severance, founder of the Friday Morning Club. The collection also contains images of Native Americans, and Chinese in Chinatown. In addition to the Los Angeles Camera Club photographers, the collection contains images created by Penney and Bennett, James B. Blanchard, and Carleton Watkins.

Sioux Indians portraits and drawing

Four portraits of Sioux Indian leaders and one drawing related to the August 1862 Sioux Massacre in Minnesota. The portraits are: Sioux Chief Standing Buffalo by photographer Joel Emmons Whitney (photPF 20261); and Shakopee (photPF 20262), and Wind Rattler Walking (photPF 20263), and Great Eagle's Tail (photPF 20264) by photographer Joseph Hill of St. Paul, Minnesota. The drawing (photPF 20265) is a pen-and-ink rendering after a photograph of a group portrait of white men, women, and children on the prairie titled "People Escaping from the Indian Massacre" that was published in "History of the Sioux War and massacres of 1862 and 1863" by Isaac V.D. Heard. (RB 246053). There are notes in ink on the backs of the items, part of which say that they were purchased in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1862 from D. Wilson Howe, and that the names and translations were made by Rev. Stephen R. Riggs, missionary. The note on the drawing verso identifies the original portrait photographer as Adrian Ebell.
